Have You Seen What Kumon Students Can Do?

Have you seen a young reader go from learning letter sounds to reading chapter books? Or a student proudly take on work years beyond their grade level?

In this article, we’re highlighting a few students whose Kumon journeys show what’s possible when small steps, consistent practice, and perseverance come together.

Have you seen a 4th grader take on variables, polynomials, and factorization with confidence?

Meet 9-year-old Shantelle, a Platinum Award student who has been enrolled in Kumon for five years. She is taking on advanced math concepts like variables, polynomials, and factorization, and says, “being able to solve and understand math problems that are usually meant for older students is really cool.” Through Kumon, Shantelle has built confidence, developed a strong routine, and learned that mistakes are part of the process. Instead of getting discouraged, she knows it is important to understand why a mistake happened and keep trying. One of her proudest moments was realizing she could understand her older sister’s high school math homework. For Shantelle, Kumon has made math feel easier and more approachable. As she puts it, Kumon is worth recommending because “it makes math cool when you can solve hard math problems.”

Have you seen a young reader go from learning letter sounds to reading chapter books in just two years?

For Azlaan, Kumon started with the basics: learning letters and their sounds. Two years into the program, he is building stronger sentences, improving his reading comprehension, expanding his vocabulary, and being introduced to beginner chapter books. Through the reading skills he has developed so far, Azlaan is learning how to read critically by analyzing texts and organizing information. Kumon’s reading worksheets have also helped him practice grammar exercises that strengthen his sentence-building and writing skills. These skills are helping him move beyond the basics and read with more confidence as the material becomes more challenging. His Instructor credits his remarkable progress over the past two years to his consistent effort and dedication to the program.

Have you seen a young student learn advanced math concepts on his own?

Bao is a 7th grader who is on track to complete the entire Kumon Math Program by early 2027. When he started Kumon four years ago, he was reviewing basic addition. Today, he is studying trigonometry, working three years ahead of his peers, and learning math concepts he has not yet covered in school. Bao shared that after strengthening his math skills through Kumon, he has become one of the top math students in his class. He has also seen his Kumon work carry over into other subjects, helping him solve problems, learn new topics faster, and do well in school. Through Kumon, Bao has learned the importance of perseverance and that “even when something feels difficult, he can keep going until he reaches the end.”
