Swimming Toward Success: Virat’s Journey Through Kumon, Coding, and Competition

Virat Shrihari

After eight years in the Kumon Program, Virat has mastered more than math and reading. Virat has built the persistence, focus, and confidence that have propelled him to success in academics, athletics, and technology.

“I really enjoy the idea of problem solving through self-paced learning,” Virat shared. “It gives me the freedom to move at my own speed, which means I can take the time I need to truly understand each concept without feeling rushed.”

Virat appreciates how Kumon’s step-by-step approach connects each level to the next. With steady practice, even the toughest problems become manageable.

“Kumon has helped me strengthen my math foundation and taught me how to learn on my own,” he said. “It’s also helped me build strong study habits that carry over into other subjects.”

Discipline in the Classroom and the Pool

Virat’s determination doesn’t stop with academics. A competitive swimmer, he has qualified for six Texas state championships and trains almost daily. He compares Kumon to his swim training in that both require consistent effort and resilience.

“When I get stuck, I don’t give up,” Virat explained. “I take a moment to reset, then push through, knowing that struggle is part of the learning process. Even five focused minutes a day can make a difference if you stick with it.”

Beyond the pool and classroom, Virat is passionate about coding and artificial intelligence. He completed the entire Code Ninjas program by age 12 and now creates his own projects. Virat’s interests also extend to finance, where he once won a district-level stock trading competition as a fifth grader.

Looking Ahead

With dreams of studying computer science and finance, Virat hopes to combine his skills to build tools that help people through education technology or sports performance innovation. His top college choices include Stanford, UC Berkeley, MIT, and Harvard.

“Kumon has prepared me for big challenges,” Virat said. “I know these schools are tough to get into—but so was Level M, and I didn’t quit.”
