Instructor Spotlight: Lisa Cheung

Kumon Instructor

Lisa Cheung, Instructor of Kumon Math and Reading Center of Burlingame

Lisa Cheung first learned of Kumon in 2009 through a friend who was working at a local Kumon Center in the San Francisco Bay area. Eager to learn more, she took an opportunity as a part-time assistant at two nearby centers: Kumon of Burlingame and Kumon of Davis.

During that time, Lisa was also working hard as a full-time student at the University of California – Davis. Once Lisa graduated college, there was no doubt in her mind that Kumon was right place to continue her career. During her time as a part-time assistant, she gained a lot of knowledge about the Kumon Method. Lisa wanted to continue to make an impact on Kumon Students.

That’s why soon after graduating, she transitioned into her first full-time role with Kumon as an Assistant Instructor at the Kumon of Burlingame. Soon after in 2017, she proudly became the Company Center Instructor there.

“My students inspire me every day. I feel grateful to have the opportunity to witness each student’s growth in both their confidence and knowledge,” said Lisa. “My favorite moments are when an Early Learner enrolls not knowing their letters or how to hold a pencil, and a year later they are able to write a note on their family holiday card!”

As Lisa is about to celebrate her fourth anniversary as a Company Center Instructor, her favorite part of her role revolves around her students.

“My favorite part of being a Kumon Instructor, are all of my students from past and present,” said Lisa. “I love hearing about their life updates from getting a new dog, becoming an older sibling, and traveling abroad where they saw a Kumon Center.”

What inspires you at Kumon?

My students inspire me every day. I feel grateful to have an opportunity to witness each student’s growth in both their confidence and knowledge. My favorite moments are when an Early Learner enrolls not knowing their letters or how to hold a pencil, and a year later they are able to write a note on their family holiday card!

What’s your main goal for your students?

More self-learning through utilizing worksheets! Thinking long-term, we’re not always going to be there for kids, but we can instill good study habits and skills to find resources or alternatives how to solve new and challenging problems.

Why do you love Kumon?

I love Kumon because of the people – both the kids and Instructors. Kids, because this is some of their first experience of “school,” and I appreciate that my team and I have an opportunity to jumpstart their learning. Instructors as well because there is such an eclectic group of people where we share and support each other for our students. There is so much kindness within our Kumon community.

Do you have a hidden or secret talent?

I’ve been playing the violin since 1998, and I seasonally play in a community orchestra in the bay area.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time I enjoy traveling with my friends and family. The destination of choice usually revolves around food!
