EARLY LEARNING PROGRAM: RIDEYVEER’S SUCCESS STORY
From Daily Habits to Big Achievements: Why Parents are Turning to Kumon’s Early Learner Program
When most children are just beginning preschool, Rideyveer was already racing ahead. By the age of four, he had enrolled in Kumon’s Early Learner Program, and within months, he was mastering skills beyond his grade level. Today, he is working three years ahead in both math and reading, proudly earning Platinum status and ranking among the top Kumon students in Canada – all while balancing sports, music, and the joys of childhood. His story is an inspiring example of how Kumon can help spark confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning from the very start.
From First Steps to First Breakthrough
Rideyveer’s Kumon Instructor Ravi Mathur has worked with early learners for nearly eight years and has seen firsthand the impact of starting young. “Kumon brings out the best in a student when they start early,” he says. “You can really nurture their love for learning from the beginning.” He adds that readiness matters: a child should be able to sit for short periods, follow simple directions, and be fully engaged in brief activities. With those foundations in place, the program’s step-by-step progression can work its magic.
At the beginning, Ravi and Rideyveer’s parents focused on essential learning skills, including sitting, listening, pencil grip, and paying careful attention to working on one lesson at a time. With Ravi’s support, Rideyveer’s family established a predictable routine—most days, 15 to 20 minutes around 5:00 p.m.—and kept it fun with small celebrations, plenty of encouragement, and the freedom to learn more when Rideyveer felt motivated. He even happily powered through two or three sets of worksheets some days simply because he was enjoying himself.
Within eight months, he demonstrated mastery of the core math concepts appropriate for his age and had begun reading—two early milestones that boosted his confidence. Regular check-ins between Instructor and parents helped keep everything on track. “Kumon is a three-way partnership—student, Instructor, and parents,” Ravi explains. “That consistent communication is what brings out the best in a child.” Rideyveer also enjoyed the opportunity to learn alongside the “big kids,” finding additional motivation and inspiration from learning new skills together.
Speed, Surety, and Self-Learning
Today, Rideyveer works three years ahead of his school grade in both math and reading, while remaining a cheerful and curious kid. His parents have intentionally emphasized accuracy over speed, especially when new concepts are introduced. The result is a confident self-learner: when Ravi presents a new challenge, he encourages Rideyveer to “treat it like a puzzle.” With examples to study and a clear progression of steps, Rideyveer enthusiastically works to learn as much as he can.
Recognition fuels his drive, too. Certificates, medals, and his Platinum status have become tangible markers of progress—and motivation to keep going. He even checks his rank among peers and sets personal goals to maintain his standing.
Translating Growth Beyond the Center
The skills Rideyveer has built at Kumon—focus, perseverance, and independence—spill naturally into school. Teachers quickly recognized his academic readiness, and the day-to-day curriculum now feels manageable, even easy, because he’s already practiced (and mastered) many of the underlying skills.
Just as important, the early wins in Kumon have helped Rideyveer grow socially and emotionally. He has grown into an accomplished and well-rounded individual, enjoying a fun-filled life. He plays soccer and swims, and he’s all-in on cricket through a local club where he’s on track to join an under-10 league. Rideyveer also studies traditional Indian instruments (harmonium and tabla) and enjoys performing in school assemblies. At home, he’s the kind of determined kid who decides to “figure it out,” whether that means learning a new rhythm or how to ride a bike.
What Rideyveer’s Journey Can Teach Other Parents About Early Learning
- Start early—when ready. If your child can sit briefly, follow simple directions, and be fully engaged in short tasks, Kumon’s Early Learner Program can nurture their attention, confidence, and academic readiness.
- Make it a routine. A consistent, bite-sized daily habit (15 to 20 minutes) beats occasional marathons. Your Kumon Instructor can help you determine a routine that works for your family, finding pockets of time to make learning a highlight of your child’s day.
- Keep it joyful. Small celebrations and positive reinforcement help children choose to do more—because it’s fun. At Kumon, we share ways parents can reinforce concepts through fun activities and everyday life.
- Partner closely. Instructor feedback, plus consistency at home, builds learning momentum, especially in the early months. Being engaged in your child’s learning experience will help reinforce their love of learning and sustain their motivation through every stage.
Looking Ahead
Ravi’s personal goal for Rideyveer is ambitious yet clear: help Rideyveer complete both Kumon’s math and reading programs by Grade 6. Whether Rideyveer ultimately chooses cricket, music, space exploration, or something entirely unexpected, he’s building the most transferable skill of all: independent self-learning. With that foundation—and his family and Kumon Instructor cheering him on—the possibilities are endless.
