FINISHING THE SCHOOL YEAR OFF STRONG

As the end of the school year is fast approaching, students are growing more and more eager for warm, carefree summer days. It’s so important for your child to stay focused and end the year just as strong as they did in the beginning of the year. If you notice your child’s grades are slipping or even their motivation is starting to decrease at this time, it might be time to consider an after-school enrichment program like Kumon.

Here are four ways your child can benefit from Kumon at the end of the school year and beyond.

1. The Kumon Program is long term and so are its benefits.

While achieving excellent grades can be a top priority at the end of the school year, a quick fix may not necessarily be the answer. What sets Kumon apart from a typical tutoring service, is that it goes beyond tutoring by actively developing critical thinking skills as children progress independently through a carefully crafted math and reading curriculum. Since Kumon is not a quick fix, students can continue building their skills and get to the root of the issue throughout the entire year including the critical summer months!

2. Your child will gain independence and confidence through self-learning.

The Kumon Worksheets are designed to facilitate self-learning by introducing new content through example problems and guided exercises.  Kumon Instructors provide specific guidance on how to use the worksheets to self-learn.  Students develop the skills and mindset for self-learning through the process of solving problems in the worksheets and gaining the experience of advancing beyond their school grade level. Self-learning helps students develop the confidence they need to tackle challenging problems and obstacles in the future.

3. Practice makes possibilities like mastery of skills, confidence, and perseverance.

At Kumon, we believe Practice Makes Possibilities™. Rather than just practicing a concept like long division, we go beyond that. Kumon gets to the root of the problem making sure kids develop a strong foundation in subtraction skills and multiplication facts.  With their confidence in core math facts, they can achieve mastery in long division.

4. Encourage Praise and Stay Positive.

At Kumon, we believe praise is a great way to motivate and empower students, and meaningful feedback can also play an important role in the development of children. Acknowledge your child’s accomplishments no matter how big or small. By praising achievements, we help identify students’ capabilities and give them something to build upon. When used effectively, praise can boost children’s self-esteem, confidence, and perseverance through any challenge. This boost in self-esteem and confidence can fuel them to really give it their all towards the end of the school year.

Stay positive! Children are always listening and will emulate your attitude. If they overhear you expressing your desire for the school year to end, they will echo your sentiments. Try positive statements like:

“You’ve accomplished so much this year in school! Keep up the great work.”

“You’re doing a great job on reading more advanced passages. Let’s pick out even more books for you to read.”

“You almost got it! Keep going!”

“Look how far you’ve come!”
