Math Program Completer Invited to Audit University Courses at Seven Years Old

Jose, 10-years-old, Math Program Completer

From an early age, Jose displayed a unique desire to learn and was absolutely enamored by numbers. By the time he was four years old, he began teaching himself various subjects independently like astronomy, anatomy, geography, and chemistry. Jose didn’t stop there. He learned how to fluently speak four languages, including English, Spanish, French, and Russian – all by teaching himself.

Since Jose was such an independent learner, his mother knew that enrolling him in the Kumon Math Program would be the perfect fit for his learning patterns. When he enrolled at six years old, Jose’s passion for math was further ignited and he was inspired to share his learnings with the rest of the world.

Jose went ahead and created a YouTube Channel called, “Making Math Easy” and his very own Facebook page, “Jose the Mathematician.” His videos not only showcase his brilliance, but his enthusiasm for topics such as indefinite integrals, solar system formation, trigonometry and so much more!

When Jose was seven years old, the University of Victoria took interest in his passion for astronomy.  They were amazed by the wealth of knowledge he had for someone his age! Professors invited Jose to sit in and audit several astronomy courses. In 2019, Dr. Karun Tanjavur, professor at the University of Victoria, even invited Jose to do a talk on astronomy at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory.

“I am most proud of completing the Kumon Math Program in about four years. I am also proud of having the opportunity to audit courses at the University of Victoria,” said Jose.

“With my knowledge of math and other topics I have gained because of Kumon, I’ve been able to follow along with university lectures and assignments pretty well.”

Jose has a bright future ahead of him and we can’t wait to see what else he will accomplish. When we asked about his future plans, he enthusiastically shared his list of goals and dreams with us.

“When I grow up, I want to be a mathematician, scientist, astronomer, and a professor as the University of Victoria,” said Jose. “Another goal I would like to accomplish is to write papers on science, astronomy, and topology.”

Among his impressive accomplishments, Jose was one of 56 students selected for Kumon’s 3rd Annual Student Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

“I was amazed, really happy and surprised when I found out I was selected,” said Jose. “I was so inspired hearing from other Kumon Students at the Student Conference. I came back full of energy to complete the Kumon Math Program.”

Jose and the rest of the attendees had the opportunity to learn from each other through educational activities designed to foster team building, group discussion, critical thinking and creativity.

Jose shares how Kumon shaped his academic career and reveals who his inspiration is.

How has Kumon helped you academically?

Kumon has helped me academically as I’ve learned other necessary skills needed to succeed, like study habits. I have also been able to focus on other subjects that interest me, like astronomy, anatomy, geography, and chemistry.

What do you enjoy most about Kumon?

What I enjoy most is being able to learn at my own pace and find solutions independently. Finding things out on my own makes me feel like, “Eureka! I found what happened!”

What is the most beneficial thing you’ve learned in Kumon?

The most beneficial thing I’ve learned in Kumon is that you don’t give up on things that are difficult if you want to achieve them.

If you could sum up your Kumon experience in one word, what would it be?

Magnificent.

What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon?

Things get easier with practice. What seems really hard now, will be easy when you complete the Kumon Level you’re working on.

Who’s your biggest inspiration and why?

My mom is my biggest inspiration, because she always inspires me to do things that I once thought were too difficult, and to never give up. She has followed me along the way. Not only did I learn things during my Kumon journey, but she did, too.
