Why Dual Enrollment in The Kumon Math and Reading Program is Important

Dual enrollment means that Kumon Students are enrolled in both our Math and Reading program. The Kumon Math Program develops strong problem-solving and calculation skills from the four basic operations through algebra and calculus. The Kumon Reading Program builds excellent reading ability from understanding basic sentences to reading advanced literary texts.
Below are three benefits of dual enrollment:
1. Strong Reading Skills Benefit Math Skills
Parents of Kumon Math Students are encouraged to also have their child study the Kumon Reading Program to ensure smooth progress at school. School math focuses on learning concepts through word problems and greatly highlights the need for reading comprehension skills. To solve a math word problem, children need to be able to read the problem for comprehension, understand it conceptually, and then calculate it to find the right answer. Children must interpret the meaning of the question and find the best approach to solving the problem. How something is written can be just as difficult for a child as what the problem is mathematically asking of the child.

2. Long-term Academic Success
Kumon is a worksheet-based program that helps students advance from pre-k through high school. At Kumon, students build strong work habits that are essential to their academic success. They develop solid problem-solving skills, high level of reading and calculation ability, and independent learning skills. Kumon Students also gain confidence in completing their worksheets and are able to advance through the program at their own pace. Kumon instills a love for learning in your child, and often students are eager to motivate themselves through their Kumon Journey to reach program completion.

3. Transferable Learning Skills
The Kumon Math and Reading Program develops excellent reading ability in students through practice in carefully reading the instructions, finding information from the passage, and analyzing the question to understand how to solve the problem. Consistent practice of reading a wide variety of passages will help develop comprehension skills and, in turn, will help children with math as well. Reading books and building language skills are essential for children to help them succeed in and out of the classroom.
